This post is titled by what the customer said to me when we stood back and admired our handiwork with these 5.6 metre wide gates. He said thank you for getting on board with my crazy idea.
The customer lives on a secluded Devon farm, in rolling hillside and they raise Amhurst Pheasants and enjoy the deer that roam across their land.
The customer handmade the gates from cast aluminium and they are hi spec, soft close electronic gates.
I made the panels for the gate by kiln forming the glass pieces from frit (crushed glass) and fusible glass pieces. I put all of the panels through the kiln to create the glass panels and then I painted all the details of the feathers, trees and deer and all the pieces went back through the kiln again. The finished gate inserts would be too large for me to transport in my car, so I temporarily set up a studio in their garage to construct the two 2.3m long panels. The panels are protected by Perspex so that any hedge cutting and farm machinery that throws up stones and debris will not damage the glass.
I am so pleased with the results. The pieces look amazing with the sun shining through them and give an amazing wow factor to the front entrance of the property. These are the biggest fused pieces I have made so far in my career and by far the most experimental idea, I mean glass gates! But actually due to using fused glass, soft close gates and a protective casing these are sturdy and beautiful pieces
